Restaurant Construction With Southwest and Midwest Design & Construction

At SWMW, we’ve got plenty of experience with the design and construction of dining establishments in Alberta. From McDonalds to The Keg to boutique restaurants – we do it all.

With over 40 years of experience in the industry, we’re a leading design-build firm for projects across Western Canada, and we’ve got the skills and expertise to succeed in each of our projects!

Our extensive knowledge of the construction industry and how restaurant construction flows differently than other construction projects helps us provide outstanding results for our clients. Let’s discuss some recent construction projects, and outline why we’re the team for any restaurant job!

Managing Restaurant Builds

For many restaurant builds, the owners of the project may be restaurant franchisees, owners, or municipal governments.

As with any industry, we have to navigate supply chain issues and transportation delays – but we also have to ensure we adhere to established brand guidelines, whether it’s an established restaurant chain or a local cafe.

With procurement of materials, in the case of a restaurant build, doing this may fall on the shoulders of a franchisee rather than our team – so we have to ensure we manage these relationships effectively and ensure the parties responsible for ordering are aware well ahead of time.

We often collaborate with the restaurant brand or franchisee architectural or design team whenever it is dictated by the owner, or we may also assume the role of prime contractor. Often, these individuals are doing this work remotely. Our role is to ensure that the drawings accurately reflect the space, and answer questions where needed.

It’s also noteworthy that the physical space where our team works and any franchise team members may work is fairly small, so properly coordinating our work, franchisee work, and any sub-trades is critical.

Restaurants are unique in this regard, particularly franchises. What may take one step in a more traditional corporate space may take three within the hospitality industry, as there are naturally more dotted lines to sign.

Recent Restaurant Construction Projects

Let’s have a look at just a couple of restaurant projects our team has wrapped up inside of the last 10 years.

Montana’s BBQ & Bar

In 2014, our client engaged us to renovate and retrofit the entire exterior and interior of this restaurant building.

It was integral that we maintained the client’s brand image, meet local needs, complete the project on time, and stay on budget. We were able to finish this Lethbridge construction project not only on time and on budget, but we met all KPIs established by the client.

At the end, we enjoyed some mighty fine barbecue once the kitchen reopened!

The Keg Steakhouse & Bar

In 2020, our team completed a full renovation of the Keg Steakhouse & Bar in Lethbridge, Alberta. We refurbished all of the booths, tables, chairs, replaced the flooring, reconfigured the interior walls, added new paint and finishes, and even constructed a private dining area.

We had a tight schedule, so we worked closely with the Keg corporate office and local architects to ensure the Keg’s meticulous standards and brand identity were met in a timely manner.

We also encountered supply chain issues, material shortages, and labour shortages – but we were ultimately able to pull together and get the project done in time for the restaurant’s grand reopening. The result? A modern and comfortable dining experience for the Keg’s customer base!
