Breweries and Distilleries

As commercial builders in Calgary, we have what it takes to create memorable craft beverage spaces.

Brewery and Distillery Builds with SWMW

As commercial builders in Calgary at Southwest and Midwest Design & Construction, we understand that building or renovating a brewery or distillery is more than just constructing a building – it's about crafting a space that meets the unique needs of proper brewing and distilling.

In many cases, it’s also about creating an inviting restaurant, tasting room, or bar for foodies and craft beverage enthusiasts. It’s a unique endeavour, with many mini-projects taking place simultaneously under one roof to create an amazing customer experience.

Discussing The Craft Beverage Industry

Without a doubt, this is the time to get into the craft beverage industry – over 170 new breweries have opened throughout Alberta within recent years, with over 40 in Calgary alone.

These locations are more than just a stop along the way – they’re destinations. With many offering guided tours, hosting community events, and providing delicious tap and tasting rooms – they’re must-sees for tourists and residents alike.

What’s more, these breweries and distilleries each have their own, ultra-unique flavour and brand, with some focusing on IPAs and others focusing on that perfect gin recipe. The more specific you can get with your vision, the better of an experience you’ll offer!

Whether you're an aspiring brewer or a seasoned distiller, as Calgary commercial contractors, the SWMW team is here to turn your vision into a reality.

Our Approach to Brewery & Distillery Construction

Breweries and distilleries have unique needs that go beyond typical construction projects. From specialized equipment installations to ensuring compliance with industry standards, we know what it takes to create a functional and efficient production space.

We believe in open, efficient communication from day one. When you get in touch with us, we’ll make every effort to get to know your project vision from inside and out – so that you can rest easy knowing that your project is in experienced and professional hands.

When we work on a distillery or brewery project, we consider the following:

Temperature Control
Optimal fermentation, brewing, and storage conditions are of the utmost importance for breweries and distilleries. Your environment and how it affects your product is key to success.

Workflow Efficiency
This is a very practical, day-to-day necessity for breweries and distilleries. How you and your staff will move around the location in a way that allows for streamlined workflow and operations is a core component of an effective brewery.

Equipment Install
Depending on your needs and project scope, we’ll ensure your desired equipment is installed according to manufacturer standards so that you don’t have to.

Ample Storage
Dry, clean, and well-ventilated storage is a key safety and product quality control requirement for a brewery or distillery. We make this happen so you can stay confident in your product!

Brewery Project Highlight: Coulee Brew Co.

In 2015, we had the privilege of building an architecturally designed, 17,000 sq. ft. commercial building situated on an approximately 90,000 sq. ft. lot.

Located in Lethbridge at one of the most high‐profile locations, the building needed to exceed the owner’s expectations for design and appearance.

The project was an end-to-end, design‐build project with the goal to accommodate a restaurant, bar, and craft beer production brewery under one roof. The challenge of this project was the uniqueness of having three operations in just one building, each with their own set of building codes and restrictions.

The real success of the project was how the pre‐engineered building design (which integrated three individual buildings into one) added significant cost savings to keep the project viable.
